Créée en 1987 par Willi Kohl et Herbert Schnitzer, l'AC Schnitzer Automobile Technik AG est sise à Aachen, Allemagne. Elle est incluse dans le Kohl Group, tout comme le spécialiste du tuning, Steinmetz.
AC Schnitzer est un accessoiriste et préparateur, y compris de véhicules de compétition. Cette activité concerne notamment la modification esthétique ou technique d'autos issues du commerce, de différentes marques : BMW, Mini, Land Rover, Jaguar, Toyota.., ainsi que plus récemment de motos BMW.
AC Schnitzer est également et surtout connu dans le monde en tant que Constructeur : son excellence technique, acquise comme préparateur-constructeur-homologateur en son écurie de compétition AC Schnitzer Racing, l'a rapidement désigné comme un solide partenaire technique et administratif (gestion des dossiers d'homologation auprès des autorités compétentes), auprès des investisseurs et des grands noms sectoriels, dont BMW.
Ainsi AC Schnitzer a pu développer son propre projet, devenant un de ces fameux Constructeurs-Reconstructeurs accompagnant souvent les grands noms de l'automobile (Ferrari à ses débuts - pour Alfa-Romeo -, et Abarth → Fiat, Alpine → Renault, Cooper → Austin-BLMC, Shelby→ Ford, Callaway→ Chevrolet, Abt→ Audi, AMG et Brabus → Benz, Ruf → Porsche... et bien d'autres ; plus ou moins célèbres et ayant pu connaitre un destin de constructeur reconnu, sous leur propre nom et les autorités homologatives.

ADDENDUM La complexité des appellations AC Schnitzer pour sa gamme de véhicules - le légendaire sens logique et organisationnel à l'allemande fait ici curieusement défaut -, rend très difficile la présentation par la notion de gamme.
Nous nous efforcerons donc à présenter cette pourtant belle production par le nom de gamme du modèle d'origine dans sa marque généraliste : "3 series", "6 series", "Z4 serie"," X4 series" etc, pour BMW ; et pour le reste (Mini..)..: comme on pourra !
