L'entreprise ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH +Co KG a été lancée en 1965.
Il a été décidé comme activité, dès le début, d'une spécialisation en tant que préparateur Technique (Motoriste, Chassis, Carrosserie et Sellerie).
La spécialité d'ALPINA est le développement automobile.
Le reconditionnement (reconstruction) de véhicules issus de gammes de Constructeurs généralistes est une spécificité germanique en Europe et est effectué selon des capacités productives en chaine, selon des gammes planifiées : ALPINA a eu un statut de Constructeur à part entière. Dès lors, sa production bénéficie d'Homologations spécifiques, au nom d'ALPINA et par Type ALPINA - pour Usage sur Voie Publique.
[ ALPINA est également devenu un grand nom du sport automobile, s'illustrant dans des épreuves de niveau mondial dès les années '70, tant sur piste avec les redoutables ALPINA BMW 3.0 CSL (pilotées par des pilotes de niveau mondial tels Derek Bell, Nikki Lauda, James Hunt, Jacky Ickx etc...) ou en rallye, avec la fameuse ALPINA BMW 2002 tii.
ALPINA continuera ensuite à briller sur tous les circuits du monde, en particulier dans les championnats locaux des diveses Catégories "Tourisme" : au Japon, aux USA et Canada, au Brésil et bien sûr en Europe, y compris aux 24 Heures du Mans ou dans le célèbre chanpionnat allemand de dimension international, l'ADAC.
